Breathwork Contraindications

At Inhale Life Collective, we are committed to creating safe, grounded, and well-held spaces for every participant who joins us in breathwork. While breath is our most accessible and powerful healing tool, it’s important to recognize that certain health conditions require care, awareness, and sometimes modification.

Why Are There Contraindications?

Breathwork can activate deep emotional processes, shift nervous system states, and bring about intense physical sensations. While incredibly beneficial for many, this level of activation may not be appropriate for everyone at all times. We share this with love and respect—for your safety and sovereignty.

Conditions That Require Caution or Modification

If any of the following apply to you, please inform your facilitator before the session. You may still be able to participate with gentle breathing techniques and supportive guidance.

  • Pregnancy (any stage)

  • Mild to moderate asthma (bring your inhaler)

  • Controlled high or low blood pressure

  • History of surgery or recent physical injury

  • Thyroid conditions

  • Diabetes (bring a glucose monitor if needed)

  • PTSD or trauma history

  • History of seizures

  • Bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or psychiatric diagnoses

  • Current use of medications affecting the nervous system (e.g., SSRIs, anti-anxiety meds)

Conditions That Are Contraindicated for Deep Breathwork

We do not recommend deep or activating breathwork practices if you are currently experiencing any of the following conditions. If this is you, we’re happy to guide you toward gentle breathing or somatic alternatives.

  • Severe asthma

  • Cardiovascular disease (angina, past heart attacks, stroke)

  • Brain or abdominal aneurysm

  • Detached retina or glaucoma

  • Epilepsy

  • Severe psychosomatic conditions

  • Uncontrolled high or low blood pressure

  • Recent major surgery or physical trauma

  • Severe psychiatric diagnoses involving psychosis

A Note on Responsibility

This practice is not a replacement for medical or psychiatric care. By participating, you acknowledge that you are taking full responsibility for your health and well-being. Always listen to your body, go at your own pace, and let us know if anything feels off—we’re here for you.

Still Not Sure?
